Candy's Excitement Did Not Last Long

Candy thought that reading was going to be easy because

during this early stage of her reading instruction, Candy had

been given a limited set of "whole words to memorize."

These whole words were easy for her to read because they
were repeated over and over and over and over and over and

over again in her reading book and because there was usually

a picture of the main character someplace on the page.

Unfortunately Candy's excitement did not last long.

Even though Candy looked forward to two recesses each
day and even though she was glad that her mother paid
for her to receive an extra bottle of milk each morning, Candy
experienced more and more frustration in her reading circle.

During her reading group time, Candy frantically began to
"look ahead" to the words she knew she would be expected
to know. She looked ahead "frantically" because the list of
whole words she had to remember was getting longer.

It was getting harder and harder for Candy to remember so
           many whole words.

Candy knew she was slowing down her group,
but she just couldn’t remember all the words.

For example, the whole words though and through looked
almost exactly the same. When Candy looked at those two
           words, she thought to herself:

"Which is which? Those words look so much
alike. They both start with the same letter,
and they are both shaped the same."

When she couldn't read a word in front of the group,
Candy would sometimes cry. She became more and more
fearful as her reading group time approached.

Candy was beginning to believe

there was something wrong  with her!

Eventually, her teacher told Candy’s mother that Candy’s
"reading skills" had fallen way behind.

Soon, Candy was instructed to walk to a little white

building just behind the playground.  The building was

           called "the Cottage."
