The Rest of Candy's Story
Candy's TRUE story takes a turn for the good!
During her times at The Cottage, Candy noticed that her new teacher never pulled out the stories of Dick, Jane,
Sally and Spot. want to cry anymore. So she really did not miss reading
about the children and their dog. trying to figure out which sentence she would be expected to read next, that she was not able to understand everything
that was happening in the
story. from Candy's regular classroom teacher. Instead of the Dick and Jane Basal Readers, Candy's new teacher used what she called phonics charts.
Each phonics chart contained letters that the teacher called phonograms. The first phonics chart held only the basic alphabet letters like: a b c. Even though Candy had learned the ABC song from a television program she watched each morning, she had not learned the sound that each of the alphabet letters represented. So Candy's Cottage teacher taught her each of the sounds represented by each of the alphabet letters.
Once Candy knew the sounds for each letter, she went on to practice with more phonics charts that taught her to blend
the sounds of the letters together
such as:
vowel like: sat, cat, bat, hat . vowels like: tune, bite, cane, pine.
Other cards taught blended letters like: bl, fr, sp, -le that
built into words such as: black,
freeze, speckle. called “word families.” However, Candy learned to sound out words from left to right before her teacher allowed her to go
on to word families. She could almost sing those sounds.
Candy found that blending sounds and reading only those words containing sounds that she solidly knew made
reading fun! middle, and ending letter blends. As she learned to sound out words, she also learned that words were made up of syllables. She eventually got to the place where she could sound out a word and also take the whole word and break it apart into tiny phonetic segments. She did not have to read whole stories everyday or even parts of whole stories.
Candy was given groups of fun sentences to read that again, contained ONLY words with letter combinations that she had mastered. The sentences were fun because they were composed of mini poems and excerpts using entertaining rhymes, rhythm, and alliteration.
Every once in a while Candy was given a short story to read that, again, contained ONLY those words with letter combinations that she had learned to blend.
Candy's fear of approaching new words disappeared!
Candy didn't need to "look ahead" anymore. She could sound out every word on every page!
After only six months of visiting The Cottage every day, Candy’s new teacher told her that she could return to her
regular classroom reading group. asked her to read aloud, Candy found that she could fly
through the words. in her reading group to being the best reader in her
reading group. a “poor enough” reader to qualify her to be sent to “The Cottage.” You see, even if something starts out bad, God can change bad into great! That's because God cares about every one of His children!
Isaiah 61:3 to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He might be glorified.
phonics reading method that utilized four overlapping phonics strategies: 1) a linguistic phonics strategy, 2) a synthetic phonics strategy, 3) an analytic phonics strategy, 4) and the 3R's of phonics: rhyme, rhythm, and alliteration.
The phonics that was used to teach Candy to read was a COMPLETE phonics program because it taught her all the blends she would ever need to know in order to read every word on every page for the rest of her life!
Candy’s story is a success story. It ended happily.
