   Diphthongs

Diphthongs are vowel sounds produced by two adjacent vowels

whose sounds blend together to create a single new sound.

When pronouncing diphthongs, the tongue moves to produce a

definite change of sound during the pronunciation.

There is a quality of sound at the start of the pronunciation

and a different quality of sound at the end of the pronunciation.

Examples of diphthongs are:

oy in boy        ear in dear

ay in day         y in fly

oi in coin        ou in out

ow in owl       au in sauce

aw in saw       oo in took
